Jessica Burns

ProStart Scholarship Recipient 2019

This scholarship will help me greatly with my studies as it will allow me to focus on my academics and not be worried about work as much to pay for school. In high school, I participated in band, soccer, key club, 4-h, girl scouts, youth group and many more activities. In college, I am planning to continue participating in different clubs and groups on campus to be as involved as I can be while keeping up with all my academics. Some of my short-term goals are to graduate college with honors and as well as to get good in fieldwork experience and to be able to be successful once I am in the work field. A long-term goal of mine is to open my own custom cake shop as well as a bakery and to be able to make out of the ordinary cakes and deserts.

ProStart Scholarship Recipient 2019

This year I am starting my freshman year at Johnson and Wales University Providence. I will be majoring in Baking and Pastry Arts. I chose JWU because this was the program best fit for me. I really wanted to have a college experience, even if that meant paying way more for it. This program will open up so many more opportunities. I hope to intern in Disney World or study abroad somewhere. Maybe even both. This scholarship will let me focus on getting an education, rather than stressing on how to pay for it. Through all of this college experience, I hope to be able to live in New York City and work in a restaurant there.

I will use the funds from this scholarship to continue my academic pursuits at Drexel University where I will expand my studies into the field of Hospitality and Management and begin pursuing my degree in a Masters of Business Administration at Drexel. This MBA will give me the skills to run and operate an independent restaurant. After Graduate School, I plan to use my education to open a small restaurantin Chicago where I would serve African and American food. I want to create a place where one can explore foods inspired from Ghanaian cuisine without the food and culture being mocked and belittled. If I succeed in this, I would have achieved my dream.

As a recent convert to the Hospitality industry, I’ve been a little hesitant that I’m making the right choice, and this scholarship helps affirm my decisions. I want nothing more than to fulfill my life through fulfilling others’, and your support tells me that I can and I will. Thanks to your assistance I will be attending Boston University’s School of Hospitality Administration beginning in the fall. I intend to major in hospitality administration and minor in journalism in the hopes of becoming a food or travel journalist, although I’m excited at the prospect of potentially owning my own restaurant as well.

Culinary school is undoubtedly an important part of my educational plan, but finances have consistently been the largest hurdle to overcome when trying to realize it. This scholarship will help me attend school without incurring student loan debt, allowing me to wholeheartedly focus on continuing this journey to fulfilling my dreams without having to worry about loan repayment. With each passing day, I am moving closer to my goal of a culinary science professorship, and my sponsor and this scholarship are indispensable parts of that journey.

ProStart Scholarship Recipient 2019

I am an incoming freshman for the 2019-20 school year at Johnson and Wales University at the Denver campus. My major is Baking and Pastry Arts. What ultimately lead me to choose a culinary career path was my Prostart class last school year. My teacher is a Johnson and Wales alumnae and inspired me to follow my culinary dreams. Receiving this scholarship has influenced my path to my dreams by fueling a desire to be even more involved with culinary organizations and taking a large financial burden off my chest. Being recognized by the NRAEF has made me feel accomplished and even more prepared to take on my culinary future! It has made me realize that if I can be recognized for my potential by the NRAEF, I can go even further in my future!

This scholarship is so important to me because that will be the funding towards the first major step of many to becoming known in the culinary world, getting this scholarship will allow me to go to Johnson and Wales, which is going to open so many doors for me for the rest of my life. The opportunities, connections and knowledge I will gain by getting a degree in Baking and Pastry arts will last me a lifetime. My short-term goals are to get a degree in baking and pastry arts from Johnson and Wales and be able to study abroad and learn from top chefs all over the world. I would love to be able to be working in a high-end restaurant in the next ten years to fifteen years as an executive pastry chef. From there my long-term goal is to have my own bakery where I can hold classes for people with special needs and disabilities and I would also like to make an appearance on the Food Network.
